The home officeHow to furnish your workstation in 4 steps

Furnishing a home office has become an increasingly felt necessity thanks to the spread of smart working and hybrid working.
Having a dedicated area to use as an office is certainly the ideal solution to work at maximum productivity, however in most cases it is probably necessary to create a study corner in another room, such as the living room or in the best case the guest room. In any case, whatever the initial condition, the goal is to create a functional and quiet environment to find the right concentration. To help you, we have created a four-step guide to organize the home office, even in cases where the space is small.

#1Creating a study corner at home

The first step is to identify the space in which you want (or can) create the work area. When you need to create a study corner in another room, it is best to choose a secluded place, possibly well-lit by natural light. It is usually easier to create a work space in the living room, because it is brighter and larger, but the guest room, the hall or the corridor can also be good candidates for this purpose. However, we tend to advise against the bedroom and the kitchen, especially if it is small: the first to keep the area where you rest separate from the area where you work, the second because it is often the most frequented room in the house, so it may not be easy to concentrate.

If the space is small

In the event that the space available is not much, it is particularly important to organize and keep all the work tools in order, both while you carry out the activities and when you have finished: the bazaar effect is just around the corner. A good solution to avoid it is to exploit the height, perhaps choosing modular furniture with a desk, containers and integrated accessories, with which you can easily configure ad hoc solutions. Keep in mind that the minimum size for a small home office is about one square meter, better if one and a half meters: a small desk can measure about 90-120 x 60 cm and you need at least 60-80 cm of space to put the chair and move around.

I am convinced that the optimal condition is to possess only what you love and what you need.

#2Creating a study corner at home

Before choosing the furnishings and moving on to the next step, it is useful to dwell on what activities are carried out from home, and for how long. For example: do you spend many hours sitting at the computer? Do you need a printer, document binders and lots of stationery, or is a laptop enough? Other important aspects concern interactions, that is, whether you need to speak often with colleagues or clients on the phone, in video calls or mainly with instant messaging apps. In some cases, it is useful to consider the setting of the room and what could be seen in the background. To improve the scenography, it may be necessary to orient the desk differently, or add dividing elements to separate the study from the rest of the house.

#3 Choosing furniture for your home office

Unless you have a dedicated space, the suggestion is to choose furniture that harmonizes with the other furniture in the room. The computer desk and a chair are the elements to start with: you can opt for a desk with drawers, or for a minimal writing desk to match with shelves or cabinets for documents and stationery. The chair should be ergonomic, to keep the back in the correct position. As an alternative to those for home offices with wheels, you can opt for a designer seat like those from Varier , which combine ergonomics and a particular aesthetic. In this in-depth analysis we give you some advice on the models. Finally, an adjustable table lamp and accessories cannot be missing, in order to keep everything in order and add a touch of beauty to the work space.

#4 Harmonize the style

When choosing how to furnish your home office, style plays an important role. Among the most popular styles for a study corner are the Scandinavian style , characterized by soft tones and a warm atmosphere, and the industrial style, which is inspired by the New York environments of the 1950s and combines different materials such as iron and dark wood. Those who love formal cleanliness can draw inspiration from minimalism, which, it goes without saying, favors the essentiality of shapes and neutral colors. In general, the advice is to let yourself be guided by the “less is more” philosophy, whatever your preferred style: the fewer furnishings, colors and furniture, the better the conditions for working without too many distractions.
